Introduction

The Sociology Department at Hindu College has a rich heritage of academic achievements and creative pursuits. The Department has an active Sociology Society with all students and teachers as its members and with elected student office-bearers. The Society regularly organizes seminars, symposia, talks by senior subject specialists, workshops with NGOs, inter-college quizzes and debates, field trips, and the annual sociology festival “RITES”. The Department also has a growing library of its own to provide additional access to essential reading material for students.
Our students have consistently performed well in university examinations often securing top positions. Many have distinguished themselves in diverse fields like teaching and research in India and abroad, management, law, civil services, public relations, advertising, publishing, broadcasting, print journalism and as development professionals in government and NGOs.
Of the faculty, Dr. Achla Pritam Tandon has been teaching Introduction to Sociology, Social Stratification, Research Methods and Sociology of Religion. She has research interests in media and gender issues. Her Ph.D. thesis from J.N.U. was on Ideology of the Press. Her post doctoral work on “Traditional Healers, HIV/AIDS, and Sexuality-India and South Africa” was conducted in Johannesburg.
Ms. Shalini Suryanarayan teaches Sociological Theory, Urban Sociology and Economic Sociology. Her research interests include Sociology of Religion and Urban India.

All the faculty members are strong believers in education being an outside the classroom enterprise as much as within. They are known for their active coordination and encouraging students’ participation in societies like N.S.S., Theatre, Women's Development Centre, Film Club, Environment Club, Choreography and Fashion Society.
