Ibtida (The Dramatic Society)

Ibtida is one of the most popular societies of the college.  Under the advisership of Dr. Harish Naval it has emerged as the leading dramatic institution of Delhi University in the field of Nukkadh Natak Movement.

Ibtida organized three Nukkadh Natak this year which won a number of prizes and appreciation in the Inter-College and Inter-University Dramatic Competitions. The members of Ibtida very successfully performed in the festivals at Mumbai, Pilani, Goa, etc. This is one society totally dedicated to the cause of new-theatre with new meaning.

 
Abhirang – the Hindi Dramatic Society

Abhirang – the Hindi dramatics society -- endeavors to hone the acting and presentational skills of the students on stage. A “Rangpoath” was organized with the same intent in the month of August. A full-length drama workshop, currently underway under the direction of the celebrated artist, Mr. Arvind Gaur, is proposed to be staged in the college in the month of February.



Earthlings’ – Wildlife Society
The main events taken up during the session of 2010-2011 are as follows:-
1) DOG FEEDING PROGRAMME
The Programme involved seeking participation at an individual level from the members of the society as well as the other college students. The programme is still in action with all the members acting as an integral part of the campaign.
2) VISIT TO THE NORTHERN RIDGE
A visit to the Ridge was made in the last week of September 2010, under the able guidance of Mr. Ranjit Lal, an active member of the Delhi Bird Group, to learn and observe more about the biodiversity of the Ridge, including mainly the molluscs, freshwater fishes and other animals.
3) WORKSHOP ON REPTILE HANDLING & AWARENESS
Organized by Mr. Abhishek Narayanan, from Wildlife SOS, the workshop was a great success. It included a brief presentation covering the basic details and information regarding different reptiles that are commonly found. The workshop was held in the college premises itself in which not only the society members, but the other students also participated in handling different snakes and other reptiles.
4) VISIT TO YAMUNA BIODIVERSITY PARK A three-hour long visit to YBP was made on November 13, 2010 under the supervision of the renowned scientist, Dr.Faiaz Khudsar. The basic objective of this visit was for in-situ and ex-situ conservation of different endangered species of plants and animals.
5) VISIT TO NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK
All members showed up at the park to interact with the wildlife in the area and know more about their requirements and the natural conditions under which they live.
6) IYCN SEMINAR
A talk on global environmental issues was delivered by Mr. Anoop Poonia, the national co-ordinator of the well recognized organization, INDIAN YOUTH CLIMATE NETWORK, covering the detrimental impacts of the effluents released by industries and factories as well as the over-exploitation of the natural resources. The seminar was jointly organized by Panchtatva, the Environment Society and Earthlings, the Wildlife society of Hindu College, on December 10, 2010.
TALK ON TIBETAN CLIMATE ISSUES
The seminar was held on December 16, 2010 and was conducted by Dr. Bhavna Singh and Mr. Govind and his colleagues from the eco-club, Delhi Greens. It was an effort to make people aware of the consequences the country has been facing due to the adverse interference of humans in different natural phenomena, occurring across the globe and how everyone should be responsible for the protection and rejuvenation of the environment. Other projects planned for the remaining half of the academic session include :
  • GAIA’11- the annual fest of earthlings, that is to be held in late February, 2011
  • Ridge project in association with the Delhi Greens eco-club
  • A talk on the topic “Extinction of Snow Leopard” by Dr. Koustubh Sharma
  • Workshop by Wildlife SOS, with the coordination of Mr. Abhishek Narayanan
  • A 3-day trip to Jim Corbett National Park in the month of March, 2011.
Science Forum
An active society of Hindu College, Science Forum has actively engaged itself in a number of activities, the highlights of which can be enumerated below.
  • Student Lectures
    Lecture by Arkaprava Bakshi, an alumnus of Hindu College, Physics Department, on ‘Confinement Methods in Explosive Reactions’. This lecture was received with zeal and enthusiasm by many students of the science fraternity in the month of August, 2010.
    Lecture by Wrick Basu, an alumnus of Hindu College, Physics Department, on ‘Theory of Relativity’. This lecture saw active participation from many students in the month of September 2010.
    Lecture by Raina Bhattacharya, a student of Hindu College, Chemistry Department (II year) on ‘Stereochemistry – Its historical, social and scientific repercussions’. This lecture saw active participation from various departments in the month of October 2010.
  • Lectures by eminent personalities
    Lecture by Dr. Patrick Dasgupta, Professor of Physics, Delhi University, on ‘Astrophysics and the Mysteries of the Universe’ on 7 February 2011. This lecture saw an overwhelming enthusiasm from students all across Delhi University.
  • ACTIVITIES LINES UP
    A course on instrumentation and microprocessor programming by Dr. C.K. Seth, Professor of Chemistry, Hindu College in the last week of February 2011.
    A science quiz is to be organized at Hindu College during the first week of March.

Alankar : The Indian Music Society

Last two years’ time has been a resurgence of sorts for the Indian Music Society of Hindu College, as the society members won various prizes and a lot of appreciation at various events and competitions. Some members are working professionally in the field of music. Others have been a part of the elite reality shows like Star Voice of India and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. They have given their voices for recording in movies and also made jingles and advertisements.

Alankar organized ‘HARMONY’, the annual music extravaganza in the month of January as part of MECCA- 2010-11, the annual festival of Hindu College. This was an extremely successful event which saw active participation from various colleges in and outside Delhi University. Harmony had two competitions, namely the ‘Light Music Solo’ and the ‘Fusion Band Competition’, which were judged by eminent and renowned figures in the field of music. Alankar, like every year, opened the college freshers and MECCA, with their hour - long performances, which enthralled the audiences. Alankar also won the first prize in the fusion band event in a competition called “Commotion”, consecutively for the second time.
In the past two years the society has won more than forty five prizes in the music festivals organised by colleges all around India. This extraordinary success was made possible only because of high levels of motivation and dedication shown by the members of the society. Alankar has become a society to be reckoned with in the Delhi University circuit.


Samhita –The Language Literature & Cultural Society

This year Samhita ventured into an array of events, showcasing the spectrum of the word culture. We began with a seminar on ‘Functions of the Poetic Diction and Suggestions’ (according to Indian Rhetoricians) by the world renowned Dr. Ramakant Shukla.
In order to nurture the seed of curiosity amongst the youth, we started the concept of one meeting every month wherein a theme is chosen and a movie screening and/or a documentary is shown followed by an extensive discussion about it. We started this initiative on the theme of Partition and showed ‘Garam Hawa’ and ‘A Train to Lahore’ followed by a discussion with Dr. Tarun Saint.
On 21st November, we took the initiative to participate in Deepak Ochaney’s Hindi Adoption (play) of the famous movie Desire Under the Elms at the Sri Ram Centre for Performing Arts.
On 13th December, we had a movie screening of ‘The Secret’ which encourages positive thinking.
On 21st December we celebrated the festival Hemantritutsava, and also the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore as well as the lecture series on ‘Computational Linguistic System’ by Dr. Girish Nath (JNU) and ‘Why Tagore?’ by Prof. Apoorvanand (DU) On 24th January, we conducted an event called Navodit - Kavisammelan (National poet’s meet) on the occasion of republic day celebration where the chief guest was Dr. Vidyakant Pandey. Samhita has represented Hindu College at various occasions such as the Commonwealth Games (chosen by Department of Art, Culture and Languages) and FICCI. Also we represented Hindu College at Ashtapadi Programme at Kamani Auditorium on 12, 13 Oct. and in the International Jaipur Literature Festival.
Samhita continues to plan out more activities to enrich culture and encourage inquisitiveness amongst the Indian youth.


Panchtatva -  The Environment Society

Nature is not a temple, but a workshop”.

This has been the inspiration behind the working of the environment society.  In the beginning of this session, the society was inaugurated by a lecture by Dr. Sahoo, first Indian visiting Antartica, followed by a screening of the movie “The inconvenient Truth”, which was well received.
Panchtatva organized a seminar on “Diseases Prevalent Due to Degraded Environment”, followed by a session by NGO “I-Dream” on Climate Change, Global Warming & Deforestation.
Our volunteers enthusiastically participated in Yamuna Clean Rally and resolved to keep Delhi Clean by having a hand in Cleaning Drive in nearby Campus Area. Continuing with our glorious tradition, the election period saw our movement of collecting electoral posters, pamphlets, banners and these were sent off for recycling to the rehabilitation centre. In an endeavour to make Delhi University “Tobacco Free Zone”, our tobacco free brigade attended the meeting held by DUSFI and conducted a survey to analyze the level of tobacco consumption among collegians.
The Society also initiated paper recycling rally appealing to curtail paper wastage and utilize it efficiently. Various bins to dispose biodegradable wastage have been setup at key points in the College and a paper recycling machine has been sanctioned from the Ministry of Environment.
A seminar was conducted on ‘Climate change & its Causes’ by a proficient speaker, Anoop Punia, National Coordinator of IYCN, a youth led voluntary organization. Society also organized a talk by Dr. Ms. Iqbal Malik, Director of NGO ‘Vatavaran’, followed by Declamation & Painting Competition, in collaboration with DUSFI on the topic ‘Tobacco Route: Journey To Death’ which received an enthusiastic response.

CAUCUS
Caucus -- the discussion forum is a society which aims to sensitize the youth towards the current issues as well as make them aware of their responsibilities as a member of the global society, and hence, make a difference. To achieve the same, Caucus promotes group discussion and formal debate in the Model United Nations (MUN) format among the students. The academic year 2010-11 was very productive and rewarding. In August 2010, Caucus held its annual international event, International Hindu Model United Nations (IHMUN), 2010. Dr. Kiran Bedi graced the Opening Ceremony as the Chief Guest. Five councils of the United Nations were simulated in this Conference, namely, the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, the United Nations Development Programme and the International Court of Justice. With a participation of around 150 students, IHMUN 2010 witnessed participation not only from the top colleges and Universities of India like Delhi University, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi College of Engineering, National Law School, National University of Juridical Sciences, Amity University, Thapar University, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, etc.,) but also from universities of the United Kingdom and Germany. Our members excelled in this event as well, with Jivitesh Vashisht, Mitali Nikore, Nikita Dhingra, Trishla Gupta and Prateek Rathore on the Executive Board (Panel of Judges), and Bharat Seth and Among Dhar Sharma winning awards.
Regular weekly meetings have been held by Caucus, during which pertinent issues were discussed. Some of these were “Wikileaks – a cyber war in the making?”, “Media Advertisement – Boon or Bane”, “Women Reservation”, “International Adoptions”, “Portrayal of Women in Indian Cinema”, “Education System of India”, etc.
Over the year, our members went for numerous MUNs organized by universities, colleges and schools across India namely Thapar University, College of Business Studies, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Sri Venkateshwara College, DAV Public School Gurgaon, and Vivek High School. In DUMUN organized by the College of Business Studies, Among Dhar Sharma and Aneesha Chandra won prizes. Bharat Seth won an award in LSRMUN. Arkaprava Bokshi, Jivitesh Vashisht, Aneesha Chandra, Bharat Seth and Among Dhar Sharma were on the Executive Board in DAVMUN. Bharat Seth and Among Dhar Sharma were on the Executive Board of VHSMUN. Among Dhar Sharma also won in BlissMUN organized by Sri Venkateshwara College. Our members also participated as a part of the International Press.
Our members will also be participating in Model United Nations being organized by Birla Institute of technology and Science, Pilani, Amity University and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, to be held in February and March, 2011.
In April 2011, Caucus will organize Vaktavya – the group discussion fest (one of its kind in Delhi University). In 2010, this event saw participation not only from Delhi University, but from Delhi Technical University and Guajrat National Law University as well. We are expecting a similar enthusiastic response this year as well.

Vagmi – the Hindi Debating Society

‘Vagmi’, the Hindi debating Society made its presence felt throughout the year with a range of events attracting huge participation. An extempore debate was organized by ‘Vagmi’ on 16th November, 2010, wherein more than thirty five participants displayed their skills of elocution. Besides it organizes a brain - storming session every Saturday covering a variety of burning issues. Vagmi will also be organizing a three day parliamentary debate in March 2011. During the year students representing ‘Vagmi’ won many prizes in various Inter College competitions as under :

The English Debating Society

The ‘English Debating Society’ has had an extremely successful year. The society instituted seven new members this year who swept all the freshers’ conventional debates held in the University this year. They also won the Fresher’s Parliamentary debate at KMC and were placed in the quarter final and semi finals at Gambit -- the Fresher’s Debate at SRCC. The seniors reached the quarterfinals at the IIT Bombay debate and two teams reached the quarter finals and semi finals at the Premchand Memorial Debate in our College. Apart from that, we won numerous awards for best adjucators and won a number of conventional debates, e.g., IILM and Rotaract Club of Delhi. Akash Kashyap won the prestigious TANTRA extemporary debate organized by Culture Council in collaboration with Hindu Debating Society.
The society organized the Ashok Priyadarshi Memorial Fresher’s debate, TANTRA and the eighth Premchand Memorial International Parliamentary Debate. The Premchand Memorial Debate was our biggest and most successful event ever with the delegation of four teams from Pakistan and the highest prize money. We also had a website www.premchanddebate.in and excellent hospitality was extended to all guests.

Vivre – The Film and Photography Society

The year commenced with photography trips to various heritage sites in the city such as Hauz Khas village, Qutab Minar complex, the Mehrauli archaeological park, the ridge, Chandini Chowk and others. The photography trips were followed by regular discussion of the places visited and the photographs taken. This fostered a healthy competitive spirit amongst the society members who participated in photography competitions held in various universities of the country. Arko Mukherjee came second at the IIPM “ELEMENTS AND YOU” competition, Ishaan Arya was second at the photography competition held during MECCA. Acclaimed films like NETWORK, A CLOCK WORK ORANGE and various others were screened in the seminar room.
In order to augment our knowledge on films, a two day interactive workshop on film appreciation in collaboration with WHISTLING WOODS INTERNATIONAL (a film making institute) will be held.
The annual photography competition SNAP will be hosted by the society culminating in an exhibition at the exhibition hall which would receive participation from southeast Asia. In addition, members of the society are in the process of preparing a table top calendar, which will depict various scenes of Hindu College.
A few members headed by Avantika are in the process of making a short film.

Manthan

Manthan, the quiz society of Hindu College, is one of the most active quiz societies in the University of Delhi. It hosts an annual festival called POR QUE, which brings together many serious quizzing minds. The members of the society are actively involved in the Delhi quizzing circuit. Through the year 2010 and 2011, members of Manthan have participated in quiz competitions at NSIT, AIIMS, DSE, Hans Raj College, IIT, etc., and won many awards. They secured a first position at the India Quiz, AIIMS, a second position at the Literature and Entertainment Quiz, Delhi Technological University, first position at Arts Quiz at St. Stephen’s College, third position at general Quiz Delhi School of Economics and third position in Movie Quiz, AIIMS.
