EXAMINATION RESULTS

Hindu college has always striven for excellence. As always it showed good examination result this year. At the under graduate level, out of 435 students who took the various final University examinations, 415 were successful, giving a pass percentage of 95%. 252 or 58% were placed in first division, 125 or 29% obtained second Division and 38 or 8% got a third Division.

At the post graduate level, out of 223 students who took the various final University examinations, 214 were successful, giving a pass percentage 96%. Out of these 132 or 59% were placed in first Division, 68 or 31% obtained second Division and only 14 or 6% were placed in the third Division.

SCHOLARSHIP

The quality and caliber of our students is also reflected in the large number of scholarship holders in the college. We have 37 University merit/Vice-Chancellor scholars , 20 Medal /Prizes have been awarded by the University, there are 12 National Talent Scholars, 37 College scholars, 38 State and other scholars. There are 39 SC/ST and visually challenged scholars and 64 have received the Science Meritorious Awards, 34 students enjoyed Fee concession and 38 students were given help from the Students Aid Fund.
Co-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES


English:

The The English department organized weekly student seminars throughout the year, in which students presented papers on diverse subjects like Children’s Literature, Diasporic Literature and others.  During the year there was  guest lectures by  Dr. Anindyo Roy of  Colby  College, USA,  Professor Vijaya Venkatraman of  Jamia Millia Islamia  and  Professor Sambuddha Sen of the Department of English, University of Delhi.  The annual Literary and cultural festival KUDOS was organized and students  also participated in cultural and literary festivals of other colleges.  Paresh Chandra,  B.A(Hons.) English, IInd year won the first prize and the second prize respectively in paper presentation contests, at Lady Shri Ram College and Indraprastha College  for his paper “Harry Potter: Fantasy of Power, Real Lack of Magical Fulfillment".

Flare, the creative writing contest, which has been open to all students of Delhi University for the last two years, was this year extended to  other universities of  Delhi as well.  The most exciting event is the publication of some of the best stories of past competitions as a book by Hindu College in collaboration with Shubhi Publications.  A first of its kind, it was made possible with the help and encouragement of Ms. Sneh Thadani.

Economics


The Economics Department held talks by Professor Ramaa Vasidevan, Assistant Professor Colorado state University who spoke on the “Hegemony of the US Dollar” and  Professor Anjan Mukherjee from JNU.  The Annual Ranjan Roy Memorial Debate was also organized.

The highlight of the year was a two day ‘Teach-in’  on the 9th & 10th November, during which  Professor Amit Bhaduri gave lectures on Macroeconomics with special reference to India’s recent growth and globalization.  It was widely attended by students and teachers from Economics departments across the University. The All-India Economics students meet ‘L’economiste’ was held  on 11th & 12th December, 2007 with   Professor Jayati Ghosh as the  Chief guest.  It had inter-college competitive events like debates and paper presentations together with a panel discussion.

Commerce:

The six  students cleared PE II (Inter Examination of Chartered Accountants) out of which 1 has secured All India rank 14th.   Dhoop Mittal, a student of B.Com(H) IIIrd year  received   call from all the  IIM’s. 

Mathematics

       ‘Acuity’ the Mathematical Society  organized a seminar on “Random Walks And Networks” by Prof. Rahul Roy, Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi and its annual festival ‘ALPHA’ on 1st and 2nd November, 2008.  Prof Rajendra Bhatia, ISI, Delhi gave the inaugural lecture on “What is infinity” and  Professor Ajay Kumar, Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi spoke on “Fourier Series” on this occasion. 

Statistics

The Department of Statistics successfully organized a  two day festival “Kurtosis” on 29th and 30th November, 2007.  Apart from the usual events like quiz and others there were academic talks by  Professor Karmeshu, School of Computer and System Sciences, JNU,  Dr. Cini Varghese of Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI), Pusa, and  Shri Vakul Sharma, Advocate Supreme Court. The most popular event was the first ever talk in Delhi University by Mr. Raghunath Madage, President- “Mumbai Dabbawalas”.  He spoke to a packed audience.

Hindi Sahitaya Sabha

The  inaugural function of Hindi Sahitaya Sabha was presided over by the veteran journalist-poet Shri Bal Sarup Rahi, an ex-student of the college.  The Deepak Sinha Memorial Lecture chaired by the eminent scholar Dinesh Mishra, was delivered  by the well known story writer Dr. Kamal Kumar who spoke on ‘Gender in Literature’.    The four day Hindi Utsav ABHIDHA – 2008 was inaugurated by Munshi Prem Chand’s contemporary story writer Smt. Chandra Kiran Sonrexa.   Other eminent speakers were Shri Kanti Chandra Sonrexa and Dr. Mamta Kalia.  There were eight sessions in all where the main participating scholars were Dr. Divik Ramesh, Dr. Lalitya Lalit, Shri Vivek Gautam, Shri Harshvardhan Arya, Dr. Krishan Lal, Dr. Usha Krishan, Shri Rajiv Malik, Dr. Ravi Sharma, Shri D.P. Sinha, Dr. Mahesh Anand, Dr. Uma Pathak, Dr. P.C.Tandon and Dr. Ashok Chakradhar.  The last session was Satire Recitation by the very well known Hindi Prose writers Dr. Hari Joshi, Shri Subhash Chander, Dr. Aloke Puranik, Shri Gobind Sharma, Shri Manohar Puri, Shri Kulvinder Kang and Dr. Harish Naval.

History

The Department has organized a historical tour to Dharamshala for understanding the Dalai Lama Centre and the Buddhist monastry.

Pol.Science

The Department of Political Science organized a two day national conference on “A hundred years of Gandhian Satyagraha” on 23rd and 24th of March, 2007 in which eminent scholars on Gandhi presented their papers.  A Gandhian Study Circle was also formed. The Department’s  two day annual festival ‘Polity’ on 22nd and 23rd November, 2007  had a  Panel discussion on “Reservation and Politics in India” with panelists :Professor S.K. Chaube, Professor Pushpesh Pant, Dr. Kavita A.Sharma, Dr. Nivedita Menon and Dr. Amita Baviskar. The theme of the prestigious  N.N. Agarwal Paper Presentation was “Development –Strategy in India”. 

Philosophy :

       It was indeed a very significant event that B.A Honours Course in Philosophy was introduced in Hindu College from the academic year 2007-2008.

Sociology

The Sociology Department  began the year with a lecture on “Insurance and Pensions” -  :A theoretical exegesis of an American story” by Fulbright Scholar Dr. Geeta Patel, Associate Professor at Wellesley College, USA.  Later Safina Uberoi highly acclaimed documentary film maker screened her award winning film “My Mother India” followed by a discussion.

B.A(H) IIIrd year went on  research field trip  to  KOTEDA Village in UDAIPUR, where  students explored tribal socio-economic and cultural life; water harvesting programmes; the architectural history of the City Palace in Udaipur; and the impact of migration on women and children.  The annual Sociology festival, RITES  in November was inaugurated by Prof. T.N. Madan, who delivered a talk entitled, “Of Apples and Actors”.  A day long Youth Meet  (in collaboration with german media organization, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), India), on the theme – “Youth In Political Decision – Making”, was  organized in which student participated as speakers  from across Delhi University colleges, JNU and IIT.  The meet was, later telecast on NDTV Metro Nation.

Sanskrit

The Department of Sanskrit organized a two week long course on “Conversational Sanskrit” in collaboration with Sanskrit Bharati.  Professor Pushpendra Kumar, delivered  inaugural lecture  on “Relevance of Puranas in Modern Context”.  Lectures were delivered by Dr. Patanjli Bhatia, Reader  PGDAV College on “Phonetic Similarities in Sanskrit and Foreign Languages”;  Professor Saroja Bhate, Former Head, Pune University and Professor Radhavallabh Tripathi, Head, Department of Sanskrit, Sagar University  on “Job prospects in Sanskrit and Related Fields”,  Dr. Jiyalal Kamboj lectured on “Vaidika Sabdartha  Nirnaya” and   Dr. Rajkumari Trikha, Reader in Maitrei College  on Philosophy  of Banabhatta”. 

      Rishiraj Pathak, Renu, Ramesh Chander, Chandan Hazarika, Mohit Kumar, Parshuram Jha,Amit Jha and Vikas Tiwari won prizes in competitions held in various colleges.  Talent awards were given to Pranveer, Praveen Kumar, Sandeep Kumar, Vijay Prakash, Kapil, Sandeep, Jwala Prasad, Chandra Gupta, Devendra, Jag Narayana, Sampat, Rishiraj Pathak and Neeraj by Delhi Sanskrit Academy.  The Academy also honoured the college for having the  largest number of students in M.A. Examination.

Botany

Students of Botany Department  went on  an educational trip to Jageshwar and Chaukori (Uttaranchal, U.P.) to study the flora.  They learnt of the importance of biodiversity during a field trip to Yamuna Biodiversity Park and also visited  the National Centre for Conservation and Utilization of Blue Green Algae at IARI, Pusa, Delhi and Mahatma Gandhi Institute (Solar Energy) at Bakoli, Delhi.  This apart, a one day Botanical festival (Inflorescence 2007-2008) was organized by the Botanical Society ‘Sanjeevani’ on 6th February, 2008.  Students from various colleges participated in this colourful event.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry scored a significant first by jointly organizing an International workshop with Department of Chemistry, Delhi University and TERI from 7th -9th January, 2008.  This Indo-US Workshop on Green Chemistry was attended nearly 200 delegates from 45 leading Academic Institutions  in the field, 15 industries  and various government agencies.

The Chemistry society ‘TATVA’ began its   new academic session with a lecture by  Professor S.C. Jain, Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi who appraised the students on the recent trends in Chemistry and the available  carrier options. 

Physics

         The Department of Physics took a significant step  this year by establish a book bank consisting of around 300 books. The computer laboratory was also expanded to provide broadband and printing facilities.

The Physics Society ‘Eureka’ successfully organized a three day festival ‘Quarks 2007’ on the 6th, 7th and 8th of December. A combination of academic and popular events it was inaugurated by Dr. Savita M. Datta, Director of the Campus of Open Learning and Principal, Maitreyi College, Delhi University.  The Guest of Honour was Prof. D.S. Kulshrestha, Head of the Department of Physics and Astrophysics.  The launching of the Physics Magazine ‘Quarks 2007’ on this occasion was also a landmark event for the society.  The highlight of the festival was a special discussion on “Nanotechnology and its Applications” by Professor S. Annapoorni and Dr. Vinay Gupta from the Department of Physics and Astrophysics, Delhi University. 

Inspiring lectures, seminars and career-counselling sessions wsere also organized together with a three day educational trip to Nainital.   On Teacher’s Day, Dr. T.R. Sheshadri, Reader, Department of Physics and Astrophysics, delivered a lecture on “The Formation of Galaxies”.  Professor Hema Sharda an alumnus of the department and now a Microelectronics Research Scholar at the University of Western Australia held a career counseling session, for the students. 

Zoology

“Genesis”, the Zoology Society, organized its Annual Festival, “Metamorphosis” on 3rd and 4th December featuring many academic events like  Paper Presentations, General Quiz and a lecture by Mr. Faiyaz, Scientist, Wazirabad Biodiversity Park.  An educational excursion to the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa was conducted from 20th to 28th September.  IInd year  students visited the  Solar Energy Research Centre, Gurgaon on 31st October where Dr. P.C. Pant, Principal Scientific Officer, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy gave a lecture on The Relevance of Renewable Energy.  The Final year students visited the Respiratory Physiology Laboratory, Patel Chest Institute  in October where they studied the working of a Spirometer.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Masque

Masque, the English Dramatic Society with  Bani Gill as President and Neha Jain as Vice President, chose an adaptation of ‘Party’ by Mahesh Elkunchwar as this year’s production.  It   was well received not only due  to its stunning stage effect but also for its technical skill, having won best Director at  Jesus and Marry College and best team at National Institute of Immunology.  It was chosen to participate  in the renowned ‘Old World Theatre Festival’ at India Habitat Centre and won prizes at Colleges like BITS Pilani, St. Stephens, Lady Shri Ram and Jesus and Marry college.  It was also invited by the ‘Atelier’ theatre group to perform at the Shri Ram Centre.

 

IBTIDA (The Dramatics Society)


The annual stage production of Ibtida in 2007-08  was Girish Karnad’s ‘Hayavadana’ directed  by Anuj Rawra under the guidance of Mr. P.C. Vernekar (NSD graduate 1979).  The play talked about the imperfectness of the universe.

The street play ‘Kahan Jayenge Bhaiya’? written by Ankit Chadha was a tremendous success.  With top awards in more than 6 colleges and guest performances at National School of Drama and Rajiv Chowk Metro station, the play raised the issue of displacement.  The office bearers for the year were: Ankit Chadha, President, Ankur Sharma, Treasury and Communications Manager.

Abhirang

‘Abhirang’ the Hindi dramatic society conducted a number of inter-active sessions to discuss the different aspects of the Hindi theatre including a  poetry recitation session ‘Aavriti’ focusing on voice modulation and dialogue delivery.  It  also staged  ‘Premkatha Panchtantra Se’   directed by the eminent theatre personality Sh. Vageesh Kumar Singh to a packed house. A few members of ‘Abhirang’ also  acted in Miranda House presentation  ‘Gadar Ke Saaye mein’.

Vagmi

It was again a rewarding year for the ‘VAGMI’ the Hindi Debating Society of Hindu College under the Teacher-in-charge-ship , Dr. Bimlendu Tirthankar.

‘Vagmi’ organized a series of Parisamvad, subjects based on Ragging, Modern education and Society and Women empowerment.

Member speaker  Rupesh Shukla of Hindi (Honours) IIIrd year  was awarded  the IInd best speaker  in Jesus and Mery College. He won the  Ist Prize in Laxmibai College, IIIrd prize in I.P. College and IInd prize in Satyawati College debates.

Aakanksha Jain, student of Botany (Honours) Ist year won Ist Prize in Lady Shri  Ram College and IInd prize in Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College debates.


Mecca, one of the most awaited college festivals of Delhi University, was organized from the 19th to the 21st December, 2005. Over 500 students from all over the country took part in the various competitions such as Debate, Quiz, Choreography, Street Play, Indian Music and others. The well known band from Pakistan – JAL as well as the famous sufi rock star – RABBI SHERGILL performed during the festival. The event was a major success due to the persistent hard work of the Prime Minister Bhargav Goswami and his team under the guidance of the ECA Committee.

Rupesh Shukla and Aakanksha Jain won IInd best team prize in Mata Sundri College debate.  Tamanna Banga (M.A. Hindi) and Nidhhi Dewedi, B.A(Honours) Ist year won best Team prize in Satyawati College debate.

         The Vagmi organized the annual debate.   30  speakers participated end  spoke on Nandigram.

Debating Society

The Debating Society inducted 7 new members this year who performed excellently in  various debates.  The team of Dipankar Ghose and Parth Kanitkar won best team in the Fresher’s debate at Kirori Mal College.  Dipankar Ghose also won best speaker in the Fresher’s debate at Hindu college and second best speaker at SRCC.  Also, the team of Akanksha Saxena, Suchita Salwan and Dipankar Ghose came second at the Freshers’ Parliamentary Debate organized by SRCC.  Parth Kanitkar won Best Speaker at Harmony – the  St. Stephen’s college festival.

Senior debaters also performed exceedingly well with the team of Megha Sud, Abhinav Verma and Vinayak Uppal winning the best team at People’s Speak – the Parliamentary Debate organized by Sri Venkateswara College, where Dipankar Ghose won the  best Adjudicator.  Urvashi Sarkar and Utathya Chattopadhyay won best team in L.N. Birla debate at the Delhi stage and Utathya Chattopadhyay reached the finals of the National stage held in Kolkata.   Also, both teams from Hindu College reached the semi finals of the prestigious Premchand Memorial Debate organized by the Debating Society.  The team of Abhinav Verma and Vinayak Uppal came third.

The debate was won by Ramjas College and received widespread publicity through the media sponsors: The Times of India and NDTV Metro Nation, who even covered the finals live on National Television.  The Culture Council, University of Delhi together with Hindu College Debating Society organized  TANTRA,  the extremely prestigious annual College Extempore debate.  Also, the society organized a conventional debate in association with the Indian Parliamentarian’s Association and Culture Council of University of Delhi on the pressing issue of environment.  It also organized the  Ashok Priyadarshi Memorial Fresher’s Debate. 

Vivre

Vivre, the Film and Photographic Society screened several films like ‘Born into Brothels’ which focused on the power of photography to change lives;     a retrospective of the works of the renowned Iranian director, Jafar Panahi, including the movies “The White Balloon” and “Offside”.

Several movies like “The Adventure”, “The Read Desert” and “The Passenger”  of the recently deceased Michelangelo Antonioni were screened  as a tribute to him.  Each of these was followed by a discussion and printed material pertaining to them was given to students. 
       In the second term, members showed movies of their choice in  a ‘Show and Tell’  and led discussions on why the movies had impacted  them.  Some of the movies shown were ‘V for Vendetta’, ‘Almost Famous’ and ‘American History X’.
      In the third term there was a  back -to -back screening session called ‘Take 4’–showing ‘Paris Je t’ aime’, the extremely popular ‘Juno’, ‘Capturing the Friedman’s’ and the Woody Allen classic, ‘Annie hall’
.

Alankar : The Indian Music Society

Alankar, the Indian Music Society began  the year  by “Dhwani” a musical extravaganza that flagged off the audition process.
      Members participated in a number of intra and inter college competitions  winning several prizes.  Rudraksh, the Alankar band, bagged the 2nd prize in the Band competition in AIIMS.  Swati Subramanian was among the top 5 finalists in Light Music Competitions and top 3 finalists in classical music competition at IIT Delhi.  She also won the 2nd Prize in both solo classical and light music competition in Shri Venkateshwara college.
      Arun Jaiswal (2007-08), an intra college music competition was held  in memory of Shri Arun Jaiswal, an erstwhile student of Hindu College.  Swati Subramanian and Soumyajit Roy, won in the female and male category respectively.
      The society’s two day annual cultural music extravaganza, Harmony (2007-08 brought the year to the close with a series of inter college competitions and performances by ‘Rudrakash’, the ‘Alankar  Band’ and the famous ‘Vedanta’ which has as its members, Shri Rajesh and Ritesh Prasanna.   Swati Subramanian, won the 3rd prize in classical (solo) competition; Tanvi Kakati  the 3rd prize in Light (solo) and Ayushman Baruah, the 3rd prize in Instrumental (solo) competition.

The Western Music Society

The Western Music society took a significant step with the is academic year  a fairly significant  for Western Music engagements as some key steps  were taken  such as the development of a western music choir and wider participation in competitions. Along with our alumni in Artists’ Unlimited (one of the premier performance choirs around the country)  Rohit, Sachid and Mallika,  helped set up  a choir in our college for the very first time.    Though the choir did not become a competitive troupe this year, with respect to starting a  tradition for the years to come, this was an important development.

  • Sachidananda Bista, Ankita and Rohit successfully gave solo performance at inter college competitions, ranging  from IIT Delhi to Miranda House.  With Shweta’s big voice and Frank’s country, lilt they helped establish Hindu College as a force to reckon with in the Western Music arena of universities.
  • In the duet singing category, Milton and Gokul collectively called Team Thistle  were successfully  at competitions such as the Youth Nexus.
  • The singing was accompanied by and indeed would not have been possible without help from some of the senior team members, Pintso, Vinayak and Rohit.
  • Other success stories are

-   Daimel from Second Year played drums for two nationally  recognized bands – Hypnosis and Frequency.

    • Abhishek, also from Second Year, has evolved into one of the most sought after base players, doing professional work as a session artist with big names like ‘Parikrama’ and ‘Advaita’ as well as gathering success with his band Frequency on Channel (V)’s ‘Launchpad’.
    • Rohit, is often called upon to appear as a guest performer in many college fests.
    • Vinayak from Third Year is on the verge of launching a career as a professional musician with his imminent solo commercial release.
    • Nikhil has been initiated into  writing jingles for  commercials.
    •  Mallika, Rohit and Sachit sing for the hugely popular Artists’ Unlimited.

              The year  was finally topped off by the annual fest, ‘Arpeggio 2007’ as part of the college fest, Mecca.  It had  a competitive format and two competitions solo and duet were held, judged by a Berkely alumni.  Sachit, from Hindu College won the second prize at the competition.

Srijya 

The Choreography Society Srijya started the year with IIT Delhi, where it qualified for the final five. It also participated in inter-college competitions held by LSR, LIC, BITS Pillani, JMC, Sri Venkateshwara College, Hindustan Times, Youth Nexus, SRCC, Hansraj and Hindu college.


Nakshatra – Fashion Society


Nakshatra, the Fashion Society participated in a number of events and won several prizes.  Saqib Saleem, one of the leading models bagged the title of (Best Male model) and also got a contract with Elite modeling agency and also won the same title at Lady Irwin College.  The team won the 1st position and  cash prize of  Rs. 21,000/- at the Youth nexus.  The last competition was in Hindu College itself during the annual Fest Mecca, where the Nakshatra members emerged as clear winners.  Swati Vatsa, President and one of the leading female models of the society bagged the title of “Best Female Model” and won a contract with Elite Modeling Agency. She also won “Best Dressed model’ at Institute of Home Economics.


Manthan, Quiz Society

The academic year 2007-2008 saw highly enthusiastic response to quizzing in Hindu College.  Kaustuv Gupta won several national level inter-collegiate quizzes in IIT Delhi, AIIMS, St. Stephens, DCE and other Delhi University Colleges.   Sidhartha Kalita and Abhishek Das did Hindu proud by winning the MECCA Quiz 2007.  A Hindu team represented by Mohit Rathi, Balu S. and Kaustuv reached the city finals of IMS quotient 2008. 

‘EARTHLINGS’ – Wildlife Society

A new Society, Earthlings, was inaugurated this year with the enthusiastic support of the students of the Zoology Department and a number of students of various other Department of the College.  Dr. P.K. Sinha was the Teacher-advisor.  A number of activities were carried out during the year, which included the following :

1.   Screening of David Attenborough’s Documentary – Planet Earth on 3rd August.
2.   A lecture by Professor Raghupathy Kannan, Visiting Professor and Fulbright Fellow, GB Pant University on the ‘Ecology of Hornbills’ was held on 5th September, 2007.
3. Nature walk in the Northern ridge guided by eminent author and nature enthusiast Mr. Ranjit Lal held on 15th September.
4.  A 2-day Wildlife Photography workshop by Mr. Abhishek Verma and Mr. Manish Dhariwal of ‘Delhi Bird Club’ including a trip to National Zoological Park, New Delhi held on 27th and 28th October.
5. Movie Screening – Happy Feet to create awareness importance of conservation in a fun manner was held in November.

Environment Society (Panchtatva)

This year started with Panchtatva the environment society organizing seminar on today’s most pressing problem – “GLOBAL WARMING” along with screening of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” a movie on the same subject.   During  election time Panchtatva took an active role in cleaning the campus of all the election pamphlets and then sending them to “RAGHUDEV  VOCATIONAL CENTRE” for paper recycling.

In October  Panchtatva  organized a rally  with the motive of encouraging students against crackers.  Our young environmentalist along with Dr. Anuradha Sharma also went to discuss various Environmental issues  with Professor P. Pardha Saradhi, Head, Department of Environmental Biology, Delhi University  and his environment team who later delivered the inaugural address on “Pros and Cons of Genetically Modified Organisms” at the  annual fest “ECOPLUS’.


 


SPORTS     

     

The overall performance in Sports was commendable.
In Cricket four players from the College represented Delhi University Cricket team which got the second position in All India Inter University Championship, namely Ashok Punia, Abhishek Kaushik, Mandeep Singh and Pradeep Mann. Abhishek Kaushik and Mandeep Singh were also selected for Vizzy Trophy Cricket Championship. Mayank Telhan, a first year student represented Delhi in Ranji Trophy and also India in under 19 World Cup Cricket Tournament being played at Sri Lanka.

In Swimming Tarun Saini got the 1st Position in Inter College Diving Championship.
Tarun Saini & Jasbir Singh also represented Delhi University in All India Inter University Swimming Championship where Tarun Saini got the 1st Position in the Diving Championship.
Yasser Tanvir won the Gold Medal in Junior National Shooting Championship.

In Basketball Navdeep represented Delhi University in the Basket Ball Team, and was also selected for the All India Inter University Basket-Ball Tournament.


In Lawn Tennis Honey Rana, B.A(Programme) IInd year student represented Delhi University in Lawn Tennis Team. In Foot Ball Yuvavir Kadyan represented Delhi University in Foot-Ball Team

LIBRARY

The total collection of the library is now 1,13804. A total of 1612 books of different departments were added during this session. The library subscribes to sixteen dailies and fifty four journals/magazines both Indian and foreign relating to different subjects. A separate room is provided to visually handicapped students in the reserve section of the library with computer facilities. This year the library hosted a one day UGC Infonet seminar on Access to E-Journal consortium for creating awareness among the Principals of the colleges of Delhi University. The Library has started barcoding books and 25000 volumes have been completed. This job is in progress and will be completed by the coming session.

HOSTEL

The Hostel has always been an integral part of the college. This year some major repair and renovation works were done in the Hostel mess and the students also got some new furniture. Residents organized many sports competitions and also participated in competitions organized by other colleges.


N.S.S.     

The N.S.S. Unit started the year with the recruitment of new members followed by an interactive workshop to help them familiarize themselves with each other. It started with the Pagdandi School Project for the children of the slum area in Quadisia Ghat (near ISBT). A paper recycling campaign was conducted during the college election time. Some members worked with Pravah as volunteers and also attended an “Exposure Trip”. At the end of November a two day annual festival ‘Srishti’ was organized which included a blood donation camp, a movie screening, a workshop with Pravah, a quiz for blind students and a music performance by NGO’s Kutumbh and Manzil. Members were also involved in inter college N.S.S. activities.

NCC


The NCC wing of the college with Caretaker Incharge Dr. Harinder Kumar affiliated to Ist Delhi Unit has a sub company of 50 senior Division cadets. The Cadets were trained in various activities related to Navy like Swimming, Sailing, Scuba diving and others throughout the year. The performance of cadets in 50 meters swimming race and in Scuba diving was highly appreciated by Lieutenant General M.C. Bhandari..

Cadet Meenakshi Chaudhary represented the college in the ‘NAUSAINIK CAMP’ at Vishakhapatnam, the biggest NCC camp. Mamta Malik was awarded the‘Camp Senior Certificate’ by Colonel M.S. Mann. Cadets who deserve special mention are Madhu Sharma, Om Prakash, Naresh, Sarita, Yeshpal, Hari Prasad, Munish Kumar and Ajay Pannu. All the cadets got good ranks and best grades in ‘B’ certificate examination 2005.

DISHA

Disha,the college placement cell under the guidance of Shri Chandrachur Singh has been very active since the beginning of the session right from setting up the help desk during the admission time to organizing seminars and placement talks. Various companies such as Google, Ernst and Young, Indiabulls, Dainik Bhaskar, Mckinsey, Balaji Telefilms, Taj group of Hotels, Genpack, Hewitt Associates, State Bank of India, Goetze, Watsons and others have visited the campus. Many students have already received the final offers and recruitment process is still going on for many companies. The placement cell also organized seminars with the Indian Airforce and Business institutions.

Women and Development Centre

This year the college achieved a significant milestone pertaining to women’s issues. It recently established a Women Development Centre as part of a network of such centres coordinated by the Women’s Studies and Development Centre (WSDC) at the University of Delhi. Its inaugural programme together with the Department of Sociology was an interactive session on “Women & Law’ where Advocate Jyotika Kalra and her colleagues informed students about the ramifications of the Indian Legal System for women, with special reference to domestic violence, rape, property right and other pertinent issues. The Centre, currently coordinated by Dr. Achla Pritam Tandon of Sociology Department, sent students for a two day workshop cum Awareness Programme on “Fall in Sex Ratio and the Prenatal Diagnostic Test Act” organized by the National Commission for Women and the Centre for Women’s Development Studies. The Women’s Development Centre has also taken the initiative to offer affiliation to Fulbright Scholar Dr. Geeta Patel, Associate Professor at the Department of Women’s Studies, Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA for pursuing research on “Financing Selves ; Pensionary Promises, Pensionary Failures”, for nine months starting from June 2006. Earlier also in 2003 the college had similarly associated a Fulbright scholar Dr. John Martin of Stanford University.

Language Programme

The college has started a number of part time foreign language courses. These include German, French, Russian and Spanish. The response to these courses has been overwhelming and the college is planning to start other language courses from next academic session. These courses are being run successfully under the Convernorship of Dr. D.N. Gupta, Senior Reader in the Department of History.

FACULTY

Dr. Brinda Bose has been awarded a three year fellowship by the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Teen Murti Bhavan, New Delhi to pursue research on Gender and Cinema. Her edited book, Gender and Censorship, has just been published by Kali for Women and Women Unlimited, New Delhi, 2006.
Amongst other seminars and conferences, Dr. Bose recently did a joint presentation with two of her Hindu College students, Akhil Katyal of B.A (H)English, IIIrd Year and Vaibhav Parel of M.A English, Final Year on “Decolonizing the Classroom? In Search of New Pedagogies for New Literatures” at an International Conference organized by the Department of English, Delhi University, on ‘New Literatures in English’, in December, 2005
Dr. Suroopa Mukherjee, Reader in the Department of English has also been awarded a three year research fellowship by Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi to work on her project “Dancing in the Streets: The Women Survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy”.
Dr. Lalita Subbu, Reader in the Department of English gave a talk on “Modern Novel in England” at a one day seminar on “The Modern Novel” organized at Hindu College jointly by the Departments of English of Hindu College and La Trobe University, Melbourne. She presented a paper on “The Politics of Subversion: The Plays of Manjula Padmanabham” at the international seminar “Past the Post: New Literatures in English” organized by the Department of English, University of Delhi. She further participated in a panel discussion on “Literature and Fantasy” as part of the inauguration of the annual festival of the English Department, Deshbandhu College, New Delhi.
Dr. Tapan Basu, Reader in the Department of English has been awarded the South Asia Research Programme Fellowship by Social Science Research Council, New York, to work on his project “The Writings of B.R.Ambedkar and the Construction of a Dalit Cultural Identity”. He also attended a research workshop on the theme of “The Long 1950s” organized at Negombo, Sri Lanka by the Social Science Research Council, New York and presented a paper entitled “Religion Conversion and the Anxieties of Derationalisation: The Case of Babasaheb Ambedkar” at the IACLALS Annual Conference at Shantiniketan, West Bengal.
Shri Tarun Saint, Lecturer in Reader’s grade in the Department of English, presented the following papers : “The Figure of the Witness in Partition Fiction” at a National Seminar on “Fresh Perspectives on Partition Narratives’ at Jai Hind College, Mumbai in November, 2005, “The Limits to Literary Testimony: Representation of Violence in Bapsi Sidhwa’s ‘Ice Candy Man’ and Anita Desai’s ‘Clear Light of Day’ presented at the international seminar “Past The Post: The New Literatures in English”, organized by the Department of English, Delhi University in Dec. 2005, “Representing Violence in Partition Fiction in English” at the workshop ‘Representing Partition’ at Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia in January 2006.
Dr. Harish Naval of Hindi Department published two books in this academic year – ‘HINDI RANGMANCH SANDARBH’ AND ‘HINDI NATAK:TEEN DASHAK’. Twenty of his articles appeared in journals and newspapers of All India Repute. Dr. Naval was invited as the main speaker in the International Literary meet at Singapore, organized by ‘PEN ASIAN CHAPTER’. He also represented Indian authors in the cultural troupe to Malaysia and Sri Lanka. He was felicitated for his literary services by the SAHITYA SANGAM of Bareilly Uttar Pardesh and was nominated the Convenor of the – PRAVASI LITERARY SYMPOSIUM organized by SAHITYA AKADEMI and AKSHARAM INDIA.
Shri Chandrachur Singh of Political Science department presented a paper at the National Seminar sponsored by University Grants Commission at the Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur on “Contemporary Relevance of Gandhi”. His paper on “Democratic Governance: The Public Private Interface” has been accepted for a conference at City University, Hongkong. Another paper on “Public Institutions and the Civil Society” has been accepted for the International Political Science Association Conference to be held at Fokuyoka, Japan.
Dr. Rajendra Kumar, Lecturer in Sanskrit Department presented a paper entitled “Kavyadosh Ka Kavya Sarjana Main Bhumika” in the three day All India Seminar organized by Sanskrit Department at South campus and another paper on “Adhunik Sanskrit Kavyon Ki Samiksha Ka Adhar” in the All India seminar organized by Kalidas Sanskrit Academy held at St. Stephen’s College.
Dr. Vijay Garg of Sanskrit Department presented a paper on “Dhanpal Ki Tilakmanjari aur Kavya Sarjana” in the three day All India Seminar organized by Kalidas Sanskrit Academy held at St. Stephen’s college.
Dr. Rekha Basu, Reader in the Department of Philosophy published “Draupadi’s Shame Revisited” in Women’s Watch Volume I, Issue 4.
M.A. Devasia of the same department published two papers : one “Subalternity and the Hermeneutics of Religious Language : Some Reflections with Reference to Samkara and Wittgenstein” in Subaltern Perspective: Philosophizing in Context, edited by George Thadathil. The Second was “Christian faith, Inter-Faith Harmony and Social Cohesion. Some Reflections on the Hermeneutic of Agape’ in the Vidyajyoti Journal of Theological Reflection, Volume 69, No.8.
The Teaching staff of the Department of Zoology attended an International Seminar from the 17th to 19th November, 2005 held by the Society for Reproductive Biology and Comparative Endocrinology in the University of Delhi. Dr. P.K. Sinha participated in a Lecture Workshop organized by the Indian Academy of Sciences. Dr. M.S. Sankaran Published two books on Ecology and Environment.
Dr. J.K. Kohli of the Department of Mathematics co-authored four research papers published one each in Journals in India, Italy, Hungary and Romania.
Dr. D.N. Gupta, Reader in the Department of History participated in the UGC sponsored two day national seminar on ‘Gandhi’ at Jodhpur University held on 20th & 21st January, 2006. He was also invited to the International seminar on ‘Composite Culture in a Multicultural Society organized by National Book Trust on 28th & 29th January, 2006 at New Delhi.
Mrs. Suchitra Gupta, Reader in the Department of History was invited to participate in the International Conference organized by the National Book Trust on “Composite Culture in a Multi Cultural Society’ on 28th & 29th January, 2006.
Dr. Nandita Prasad Sahai, Reader in the Department of History wrote a book entitled ‘Politics of Patronage and Protest: State, Society and Artisans in Early Modern Rajasthan’, recently published by the Oxford University Press. Her articles were also published in international journals like the Journal of the Economic & Social History of the Orient, and the Indian Economic and Social History Review.
Dr. Tripta Wahi, Reader in the Department of History presented a paper on “The Nature of Land Rights in the Pre-Colonial Punjab; A Study of the Tenancy Documents’ at Punjab History Conference in March 2005.
Dr. Kavita A Sharma published several articles and presented papers in National and International seminars and conferences. These included the “Role of Women Educators” at FICCI Women’s Organisation, Delhi, “Mahabharata Through the Eyes of Women” at UGC Academic Staff College, Varanasi. She was also a panel discussant at Chandigarh for “Autonomy in Higher Education: Regulatory and Legal Issues”.
She has also been conferred the “Indira Gandhi Sadbhavana Award” by the National Integration and Economic Council on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Late Smt. Indira Gandhi. Two of her books “Windmills of the Mind” and “Queens of Mahabharata” have been accepted for publication by Rupa & Co.
